WIPA NTDC Supplemental Training: Providing Effective Information and Referral (I&R) Services in the WIPA Program Teleconference

Format: Teleconference

Date(s): April 18, 2019

This two-hour teleconference session will offer CWICs practical hands-on strategies for providing effective information and referral (I&R) services to Social Security disability beneficiaries. The presenter will clarify the purpose of I&R services in the WIPA program, describe which beneficiaries would be limited to only I&R services, and discuss the role of I&R services in working with beneficiaries who also receive individualized work incentives counseling.  The training will emphasize how to provide employment focused I&R for beneficiaries who are just beginning to think about work as well as those who are currently employed.

After this training, CWICs should be able to:

  1. Describe the purpose of I&R services in the WIPA program and identify to whom those services are provided;
  2. Describe the steps involved in delivering effective I&R services and the limits on I&R services;
  3. Describe the role of CWICs in providing employment focused I&R services;
  4. Describe how to provide I&R services about Social Security benefits issues and identify when to refer beneficiaries to Social Security; and

Describe how to provide I&R services to meet needs in the four (4) main areas of financial assistance, physical and mental health resources, advocacy or legal assistance, and crisis intervention.

Completion Requirement:

You are required to successfully complete a ten-question, multiple-choice, competency-based assessment within one week after the training to receive completion credit.  The assessment will be located in your myNTC account.  You will receive additional instructions in your confirmation email on how to take the assessment.
